they will spend part of their day here, get used to a different daily routine and learn to cope with an initially strange environment. They will get to know many new children and build up a relationship of trust with their nursery school teacher. This will be a significant event for your child.
soon your child will start at our nursery school.
It is our objective to ensure that your child is comfortable with us. In order to achieve that we want to cooperate with you to make the start as easy as possible for your child. You know for yourself that the first step is often the most difficult. Just think of the first day in a new job. In addition to curiosity and excitement there will certainly be agitation and uncertainty, possibly even some anxiety. You know the feeling of relief if you were given a friendly welcome and found colleagues whom you could trust.
For your child the initial time at nursery school is very similar. Some children perceive this time much more intensive still, since they had never before experienced new situations, unlike us adults. In particular young children cannot comprehend what is likely to happen. They have no concept of time and do not understand what it means to be picked up "soon". Young children do not have sufficient verbal skills to express themselves and well-meant explanations are not very helpful to them.
Together we can systematically make the beginning easier for your child. To achieve that you need to accompany your child approximately 1-2 weeks in advance, until your child has built up a relationship of trust with their nursery school teacher. Younger children will initially be at nursery school for approximately 1 hour - from 2.30 to 3.30 pm -, older children possibly a bit longer. After approximately three days you will first leave your child for a short time. In this situation your child will make clear whether they still need you to feel secure or whether they already trust the nursery school teacher enough. If the latter is the case then you can leave you child in the group a little longer every day.
Terms of admission
Once you have filled in all the paperwork for admission, all the nursery school needs is a medical certificate from your paediatrician or the health authority (”Gesundheitsamt“), which must not be older than 8 days. You can hand this on the first day at nursery school.
What else do I need to know?
The first interview is usually with the management of the nursery school. This is the time when you will be offered a place for your child and receive information about us, the opening hours, meals and educational offers. It may be sensible to discuss your child’s individual needs during this first interview, for example the issue of meals in case of an existing milk protein allergy. Your child does not have to be ”potty trained“ when starting nursery school. Each child starts potty training when they feel ready, usually between the ages of two and three. Just bring along a change of clothes, nappies, wet wipes and cream for your child. And don’t forget slippers, trainers, toothpaste and toothbrush. If possible label everything with your child's name, put the things into a labelled box and give this to your child's teacher.
And now another educational aspect:
When the day of your first separation arrives and you can feel the tears dwelling up, try to hide your own sadness as much as possible, so that you can say goodbye to your child as cheerfully as possible; once you have left the room feel free to cry if you want.
Even after a sustained period of settling-in your child may not want to let you go. It is important that you make it very clear you are leaving, for example by saying, ”Laura, I am going. Mum will be back later to pick you up“.
By that time your child trusts the nursery school teacher enough to be comforted by her within a few minutes. Should this not be the case she will get in touch with you. The best thing is to make appropriate arrangements with ”your“ nursery school teacher.
If your child wants to bring toys to the nursery school
Many children find it easier to settle in or to fall asleep during the midday rest, if they have a familiar cuddly toy or something similar close by. We have no objections to this. However, beyond that we would ask you to not let your child bring any toys to the nursery school. Unfortunately we are not able to assume any liability; we also want to spare the children the disappointment of loosing a loved or new toy.
And of course we have plenty of toys and things to occupy the children in each group room.
If your child is absent
If your child is absent due to sickness or other reasons, please let us know by 9 a.m. at the latest. After an illness your child may only return with a medical certificate, which confirms that your child is free from infectious diseases.
How to best dress your child
Children like to play on the ground. In the summer they prefer games in the sandpit, where they get dirty, too. Your child’s clothes should not unnecessarily restrict any attempts to explore their environment. We would therefore ask you to dress your child appropriately. During the autumn and winter month please bring along rain coats/trousers and/or boots, hat, scarf and gloves. We like to take the group for a walk, even after it has rained. The same applies in the winter, when it is cold or it is snowing.
What about the meals?
All children who arrive by 8.30 a.m. can then have breakfast at our nursery school. Your child should bring a sandwich or something similar for breakfast. Please do not send your child to us with sweets.
Lunch is around noon. The weekly meal plan is displayed in the lobby, just behind the main door on the right. After lunch the children rest from 12.45 p.m. to approximately 2.00 p.m. Around 2.30 p.m. the children will have a snack of fruit or yoghurt, which they bring from home. The nursery school provides drinks for each meal.
Every three months the individual groups hold parents’ evenings. We attach great importance to your regular attendance at these evenings, since your cooperation is an important prerequisite for meaningful educational work with your child. Parents’ evenings present an opportunity to jointly plan and discuss educational tasks.
A little note on the side
Running this nursery school requires considerable administrative effort. In order to do this in as little time as possible please notify us immediately of any changes of your address, phone number and any other details you specified at the time of admission. We must be able to contact you or acquaintances of your family in exceptional circumstances. Announcements by us, such as closing times, notices or contagious diseases, will be displayed on the main door or on the door to the group room.
